Insight from the West Fargo PD: May means local Cleanup Week

The city of West Fargo will participate in the metro wide Cleanup Week May 5 through May 9.

Cleanup items must be from residences as no commercial waste will be accepted. Items will be collected on your normal garbage pickup day. Crews will not return to pick up items set out after collections have been made in the area. Homeowners are asked to not set out items more than one day early to avoid the items being spread by the wind or by scavengers.

To assist with collection, please separate items of the same type into distinct piles (tires, appliances, furniture, brush, household garbage, etc.). To avoid confusion keep household garbage at least four feet away from other cleanup items. Separate trucks will travel the collection routes to pick up the household garbage and the cleanup items. To increase the efficiency of collections, please place cleanup items in disposable containers when practical.

The city has set a limit of two appliances per household.

Remove refrigerator and freezer doors to prevent a child from being trapped inside. Do not place food or any other waste inside appliances as appliances are sent to a metal recycler. Any item placed inside an appliance must be removed before collection.

West Fargo also has the following Cleanup Week rules: Bundle and tie brush in 4-foot lengths; logs must be no more than 4 feet long and 10 inches across. Building materials will be collected, however, concrete, sod or dirt will not. Waste oil, paints, varnishes and other household hazardous waste will not be collected but should be taken directly to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 606 43 1/2 St. N., Fargo.

During Cleanup Week, the transfer station will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. all week. The facility is able to accept all Cleanup Week items that residents of West Fargo would like to drop off. Under normal operations the transfer station is open from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Do not put yard waste with your regular garbage or with Cleanup Week collection items. West Fargo has established drop-off sites for yard waste at the West Fargo Transfer Station, 1620 W. Main Ave. Dave’s Tire, 12th Street East and Main Avenue; Sanitation Department, 117 8th St. W.; South Elmwood Park, 500 13th Ave. W. and at 40th Avenue and Sheyenne Street under the water tower. For more information on yard waste, call 433-5400 or (701) 306-8922.

Expect to encounter heavy equipment and truck traffic in the city as Cleanup Week operations get underway. Stay clear of work areas and expect some short delays in traffic movement.
