Banding together for Dewey, benefit Monday night at VFW

The holidays are about giving and the perfect opportunity for doing just that is presenting itself Monday, Dec. 21, from 5 to 7:30 p.m., at the West Fargo VFW, 308 Sheyenne St., when colleagues and friends rally around fellow law enforcement officer Chris Dewey for a special benefit event.

The Fraternal Order of the Police Red River Valley Lodge #1, in partnership with the West Fargo VFW Post 7564, is hosting the event, which will feature a spaghetti meal and silent auction with all proceeds going to the Dewey family.

Dewey, 26, a Mahnomen County Sheriff's deputy, was shot in the head and abdomen in an incident Feb. 18, at Mahnomen. In early March, he was flown by air ambulance to the Craig Hospital, Englewood, Colo., where he's had his ups and downs and setbacks, experiencing additional surgery in early November. Since that procedure, he's been involved in speech and physical therapy in efforts to improve a variety of skills, including verbal communication.

During his hospitalization, Dewey's wife, Emily, has been at his side, supporting and encouraging him every step of the way.

West Fargo Police Department officer Rhonda Jorgensen, who is coordinating the benefit, said local law enforcement agencies, including the West Fargo, Fargo and Moorhead Police Departments and the Cass and Clay County Sheriff's Department will have strong representation at the event.

"Our goal is to try and help out the Dewey family in any way we can," Jorgensen added. Friends of the Dewey's from Mahnomen as well as members of the Mahnomen County Sheriff's Department are expected to attend. It is even possible that Emily Dewey might be present but that will depend upon circumstances at that time.

Jorgensen said the silent auction is being made possible through the generous donations of several local individuals and businesses. Included among the silent auction items are: a Fargo Harley-Davidson men's leather riding coat; personally autographed photos from Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor of the Minnesota Vikings; a pair of Timberwolves versus Chicago Bulls tickets for February; a guided pheasant hunt in Sergeant County, with two nights hotel lodging; Hotel Donaldson, Fargo Holiday Inn and Homestead Suites motel packages; a $100 gift card to Advanced Auto Body, gift certificates to SunMart and Hornbacher's; an NDSU rug; pub mirrors, gift baskets, and a variety of other items.

The benefit, which will take place in the lower level of the VFW, is open to everyone so anyone who can make it out is encouraged to attend and support the Dewey family. Cost of the meal will be $5 and free will donations will also be accepted.

Those unable to attend who would still like to contribute can do so by mailing their donation to: FOP Lodge No. 1, c/o Dewey Benefit, PO Box 962, Fargo, N.D. 58107-0962.

Anyone with questions related to the event can contact Jorgensen at 433-5500.
