Insight from WFPD: Police to better publicize street closings

The recent street closing associated with the Streets Alive Event on August 23 has caused the Police Department to review how notification of street closings occurs.

Similar to past events, the organizing agency asked for and received a mailing list for those homes impacted by the street closings. The organizing agency then sent out notification. It is unknown if some addresses were missed in the mailing list, if a notice was not sent to a particular address, or if the mailing was overlooked or misunderstood. It is planned that future mailings include either the City of West Fargo or West Fargo Police logo to draw attention to the importance of the message.

The City and the West Fargo Police Department attempt to inform the public of upcoming events in our community that may have an impact on access to an area. Notification may be sent by mail or by posting signs in a particular area. Additional information is posted to the City and Police Department web sites. Media releases are also provided to the local media outlets for rebroadcast. The Police Department may even choose to use the CODE RED telephone notification system.

Two events will be held this week that will impact Sheyenne Street and the surrounding areas. On Sept. 15 the final session of the 2011 Cruising Sheyenne will occur. The event has drawn more than 600 vintage, classic and customized motor vehicles. Traffic on Sheyenne Street will be restricted from 4 p.m. to approximately 9 p.m. Several side streets on to Sheyenne will be closed. Watch for the signs.

On Sept. 17 the City of West Fargo will host the West Fest event. Traffic on Sheyenne Street will be restricted at times and will be closed from around noon until 3 p.m. Other areas affected will include the area around the Lodoen Center and First Street.

Beginning at 7:30 a.m. the roadways adjacent to the Lodoen Center and including the 100 and 200 block of Fifth Street East will be closed. Parade Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. at 4th Ave. and 4th St. E. The area will open again at approximately 2 p.m. when all parade entrants have left the staging area.

The parade is set to start at 1 p.m. at Sheyenne St and 2nd Ave. E. The parade will leave the Lodoen Center on 2nd Ave. E. traveling to Sheyenne. The route travels down Sheyenne St. to 10th Ave. The participants will travel on 10th Ave to 2nd St E. This is considered the conclusion of the parade. They will return to the Lodoen Center by way of 2nd St E and 3rd Ave. The parade route roadways will close at approximately 12:15 p.m. and reopen once the parade has concluded.

The Family Fun event will require the closing of 1st St from 7th Ave to 8th Ave. during the time period of 1 to 6 p.m. Food vendors will be set up on the roadway.

The City of West Fargo and the Police Department recognize the need to keep the public informed of what is occurring within our community. We strive to reduce the negative impact upon any one person or a particular neighborhood. Considerable consideration and planning is required to seek out the option that best serves the community. We thank you for your patience and understanding.
