Law enforcement gears up to make motorists safer

Law enforcement agencies throughout North Dakota, including the West Fargo Police Department, are involved in increased seat belt enforcement conducting a Click It or Ticket campaign continuing through Saturday.

The goal is to make people aware of the importance of wearing seat belts and ensuring that everyone is doing so, in turn making them safer as they travel city and rural roadways.

With the recent wet precipitation, now is the peak time for unexpected dangerous driving conditions all over North Dakota.

The snow, sleet and other hazardous weather related driving conditions are beyond everyone's control; however, there is one element everyone can control - buckling up seat belts whenever entering a vehicle.

The national average of seat belt use in the United States, as reported by the National Occupant Protection Use Survey (NOPUS), was 85 percent in 2010.

The 2011 Seat Belt Use in North Dakota survey shows North Dakota's seat belt use rate at only 76.7 percent.

In 2010, 71 percent of individuals killed in motor vehicle crashes in North Dakota were not wearing their seat belts.

Law enforcement officials are hoping the beefed up efforts will heighten people's awareness of the importance of wearing a seat belt and help save lives.
