Mattern: It's your chance to be 'Mayor for the Day'
Whenever I get the chance to interact with the youth of our community, one of my favorite
questions to ask is "what would you do if you were mayor for the day?" I feel it's an important
exercise that helps young people think about public service, leadership and the impact each
individual can have in their community. And, the thoughtfulness and creativity of the answers I
receive never ceases to amaze me.
It is in this spirit that I'm excited to encourage our third- and seventh-grade students to enter the
North Dakota League of Cities statewide "If I Were Mayor" essay contest. Essays must address
why the student feels their community is great and what they would do to improve the city if he
or she were mayor. The contest winners will be announced in conjunction with City Government
Week, April 2-6, receive a $150 cash prize and have their essays featured in the League's
I'm confident the youth of our community are brimming with ideas that could truly help improve
our great community. In fact, I am looking forward to borrowing a few ideas myself! For more
details about this contest, please visit www.ndlc.org/essay.
Mattern is the mayor of West Fargo.
