Manson takes third to lead Mustangs at state girls golf meet

All season, Maggie Manson was on the verge of being among the best golfers in the state.

The West Fargo Sheyenne junior proved she belonged in that company on the state's biggest stage.

Manson shot a four-over-par 76 on the first day and an eight-over 80 for a 156 total for third place individually during the North Dakota Class A state girls golf meet on Monday, Oct. 2, and Tuesday, Oct. 3, at King's Walk Golf Course in Grand Forks. She led the Mustangs to eighth place after a 362 on the first day and a 345 on the second day for a two-day total of 131-over 707.

Manson shot two-over on both the front and back nines in her first round where she birdied the 319-yard par 4 No. 7. After scoring a double-bogey on the 314-yard par 4 No. 2 in her first round, Manson birdied the hole in her second round as well as the 435-yard par 5 No. 14 and the 434-yard par 5 No. 9.

West Fargo's Jesse Price also qualified for the state tournament after tying for 15th with a 92 at the Eastern Dakota Conference meet at King's Walk in Grand Forks a week earlier. The Packers senior shot an 87 on the first day and a 91 on the second day for a total of 178 to tie for 38th individually. Price birdied the 84-yard par 3 hole No. 4 and the 315-yard par 4 hole No. 12 in her second round.

Ashley Peterson shot an 18-over 90 on the first day and a 17-over 89 on the second day of the state tournament for a two-day total of 179 to tie her for 40th individually. The Mustangs senior scored par on her first five holes of her second round.

Sheyenne's Allison Schmidt scored a 98 on the first day and an 85 on the second day for a two-day total of 39-over 183 to tie her for 48th. The junior shot a three-over 39 on the front nine of her second round.

Mustangs junior Jessica Koerselman tied for 55th with a 98 on the first day and 92 on the second day for a 46-over 190 for the tournament. She scored par on four of five holes midway through her second round.

Mollie Gast shot a 101 and a 91 for a two-day total of 48-over 192 to tie for 58th with Alison Ault, who shot a 98 and 94 for a two-day total of 48-over 192. Gast, a Sheyenne junior, birdied the 315-yard par 4 No. 11 and 415-yard par 5 No. 18 on her way to shooting nine-over on the back nine and shooting 19-over on the second day. Ault, a Sheyenne senior, shot 10-over on the front nine to finish her best round of the tournament with a 22-over 94.
