WF's Sayers claims MMA title and belt
West Fargo's Dane Sayers claimed the MAX Fights Middleweight Championship title and belt on Nov. 14, defeating Tom Van Kley, Sioux Falls, S.D., with a standing guillotine choke hold in the first round.
Proving Grounds at The Venue in Fargo, was at near full capacity with 850 in attendance for Sayers' seventh MMA fight, bringing his professional record to an undefeated 7-0.
Undercard results were as follows: Tat Romero, Iron Range, Minn., defeated Jake Meyer; Jeremy Stetz, Barnesville, Minn., defeated Aaron Downing; Jared Zahalka, Hibbing, Minn., defeated Josh Burgett; Webster Cox, Lake City, Minn., defeated Dan Jones; Cameron Ramberg, Fargo, defeated Chase Kerber; Shane Jones, Hibbing, defeated Nick RunningBear; Nick Wagner, Fargo, defeated Dominick Oliver; Carl Klocke, Carrington, N.D., defeated Andrew Keller; and John Kalenze, Fargo, defeated Jason Ehresmann.
Mixed Martial Arts is a full contact combat sport combining martial arts traditions such as Jiu-jitsu, boxing and wrestling. Victory in a match is gained in one of several ways: by the judges' decisions, a stoppage by the referee or ring doctor, by submission, knockout or by a competitor's cornerman throwing in the towel. A fighter also may admit defeat during a match by tapping out.
