Ty's Take: Tourneys grab spotlight, but other sports continue battle

With state and region tournaments in full swing, sometimes it's easy to forget about the sports still fighting through the regular season.

Here's a quick recap of last week's West Fargo sports.

Girls hockey

After losing their first conference game of the season to Bismarck two weeks ago, the Packers girls hockey team finished the regular season on a high note, defeating Fargo South 6-2 on Tuesday, and beating Jamestown 3-1 on Thursday.

The wins lifted West Fargo to 17-1-0 in the conference and 17-2-0 overall.

Leading the Packers' charge were overall points leader Kacie Johnson with three goals and two assists, and Kaylee Lothspeich with a goal and three assists. Andrea Klug made 39 saves on the week.

Next up is the North Dakota state tournament at the Ralph Englestad Arena in Grand Forks on Feb. 25-27. West Fargo kicks things off by facing No. 8 Williston at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Boys basketball

The West Fargo boys basketball team lifted its Eastern Dakota Conference record to 9-3 (12-5 overall) after defeated Wahpeton 64-47 on Tuesday, Feb. 16.

Leading the Packers were Austin Nelson and Spencer Flaten with 11 points apiece.

The Packers have two final conference games before the regular season is complete. They faced Fargo South (7-5, 7-10) on Tuesday, but the results were not in when the Pioneer went to press. West Fargo's big finale is 7:45 p.m. Thursday at home against Grand Forks Central (1-11, 1-15).

Girls basketball

After a somewhat harried season, the West Fargo girls basketball team has found its stride. They leapfrogged Grand Forks Central to take over sixth place in the standings after defeating Whapeton 81-58 on Tuesday, and the Knights 75-66 on Friday.

Leading West Fargo through both games were juniors Katelyn Holland and Carissa Becher, who each finished with a

combined 43 points.

The Packers (5-7, 7-10) faced Fargo South (9-3, 14-3) on Tuesday, but the results were not in by press time. West Fargo's final game of the season is 7:45 p.m. Thursday on the road against Grand Forks Central (3-9, 5-12).

Boys swimming and diving

The Packers boys swimming and diving team finished the regular season by defeating Jamestown 123-61 on Friday, Feb. 19.

They now will compete in the East Region tournament on Saturday at H.E. Berger pool in West Fargo.
