West Fargo Sheyenne started with the earliest game of the day, but the Mustangs didn't start sluggish.

The No. 5-seeded Mustangs scored 14 unanswered points to start the game on their way to beating crosstown rival and No. 8-seeded West Fargo 59-39 in East Region girls basketball tournament consolation play at Scheels Center at the Sanford Health Athletic Complex.

The Mustangs didn't allow a Packers score for the first three minutes which led to their 14-0 run on their way to a 17-point lead at halftime. Kierra Freih scored 11 of Sheyenne's first 19 points as she made four 3-pointers in the first half on her way to a team-high 14 points to go with five rebounds. Sheyenne plays in a state-qualifying game at 4:15 p.m. on Saturday, March 3.

"Both teams are fighting for their season to continue, and because of that both teams are playing so hard at times it had some ugly moments," Sheyenne head coach Brent Hintz said. "I thought the kids were really focused. They seemed loose. There was a lot of conversation and laughter, but they had an understanding that they had a job to do today."

McKenna Becher recorded a game-high 19 points and seven rebounds for the Packers, who saw their season end with the loss.

"I'm so proud of how our kids have progressed through the year from where we were to where we are," Packers head coach Mike Benson said. "Our kids have learned some things. I'm really proud of our seniors for laying that foundation for us moving forward."
