Packers boys hockey team top Jays

The West Fargo boys hockey team hopes to have shaken off the first two-thirds of the season after a 7-2 walloping of the Jamestown BlueJays on Thursday at Veterans Memorial Arena.

The Pack scored the first goal of the game, but found themselves in a 2-1 hole by the six-minute mark. They then exploded into the intermission with three goals in the final five minutes of the opening period.

The Packers did not look back from there, scoring two goals in the second period and one more in the third to cap off the big win.

It was the highest-scoring game to date for the Packers, topping their 5-1 victory over Fergus Falls on January 2.

The Packers’ top performances came from senior forward Tyler Berginski and sophomore forward Kody Coles, both of whom had two goals and one assist.

Junior Riley Vareberg assisted on both of Berginski’s goals, then scored one of his own in the third period.

Seniors Nathan Cookman and Tyler Dolan scored the other two goals for West Fargo.

Netminder Bailey Vareberg stopped 19 of the 21 shots he faced.

The 5-10-0 Packers host Grafton tomorrow night, then host Bottineau on Saturday, and Devils Lake on Tuesday. All games start at 7:30 p.m.
