Baseball takes doubleheader from Valley City

The West Fargo baseball team kept itself in the hunt for the conference’s top spot with doubleheader victory over Valley City on Thursday, beating them 17-0 in the first game and 7-0 in the second.

Pitching proved to be the key factor Thursday.

In the first game, senior Anjelo Shepherd allowed no hits and fanned eight batters in just three innings of work on the mound. Shepherd is now 2-0 on the season.

In the second, junior Ben Strahm struck out 13 for his second straight no-hit performance and his second victory of the season.

Senior catcher Austen Gilbertson hit his first home run of the season in the second game.

The Packers are currently 10-4 (6-2 in the EDC) and ranked third in the conference, just 2 1/2 games out of first. They have a doubleheader at Fargo Davies on Thursday and a home doubleheader Friday against Grand Forks Central. Both are set to begin at 5 p.m.
