On a cold, blustery May day, the West Fargo girls soccer team brought some much-needed heat in the form of a victory to shivering fans.

The Packers picked up their fourth win of the season Thursday by taking down Grand Forks Central 3-0. The win gave West Fargo (4-5-1 EDC, 4-5-1) a critical three points in the standings, where they now sit in fifth place just behind Fargo Davies (5-5-1, 6-5-2).

As players and fans alike bundled up with blankets to fend off the cold, the West Fargo players kept the Knights at bay with uncanny ball control and a stifling defense.

With 30 minutes left in the first half, the Packers got one of their best chances of an early strike when Allison Springer picked up a nice pass from midfielder Erin Krogh. But in the second it took Springer to control the ball, Central keeper Jenna Poitra was ready for the shot and made the save.

The Packers kept up the pressure, however, and less than a minute later Andrea Muller had their second chance. Breaking out down the field to get open, Muller picked up a high pass and screamed toward the goal with no defenders in front, but her shot was high and dinged off the crossbar.

Maybe sparked by that close call, Muller once again found herself with possession and within striking range 14 minutes into the period. Her shot off a steal from captain Lauren Johnson found the back of the net, and the Packers were on the board 1-0.

Bailey Hurley and Mara Lopez each scored for West Fargo in the second half to put the game away. Goalkeeper Missy Halda had one save for the Packers, while Poitra stopped 15.

More big games await West Fargo as the season winds down. Games Monday against Devils Lake and Tuesday against Fargo Davies were unavailable by press time. The Packers host Red River at 7 p.m. Firday, and their final game of the regular season is 7 p.m. May 27 versus North.
