The Packers baseball team was not to be outdone by the softball team. They also claimed the Eastern Dakota Conference title over the weekend, earning it through three close victories.

The Pack edged past Fargo South 2-1 on Thursday before topping the Fargo North Spartans 6-5 on Friday and ultimately beating the Shanley Deacons 4-1 to take the title.

"We played hard all weekend," head coach Brett Peterson said. "We didn't swing the bats particularly well, but our pitchers came through for us. They were really the deciding factor for us. They kept teams off balance."

The "deciding factor" started off with senior ace Camran Bonnema striking out 13 Fargo South batters.

Senior Kory Wolden took the mound the next day. Despite a solid outing, he pitched to a no decision, with senior Matt Barclay stepping in to pick up the back-and-forth win.

In Saturday's championship game, it was junior pitcher Noah Paper that picked up the victory, with senior Adam Schroeder earning the save. The two combined for six strikeouts while giving up only three hits.

The Packers will now take on the Jamestown Blue Jays tomorrow in the first round of the North Dakota Class A baseball tournament. According to Peterson, the team will focus on their hitting, but is confident in their abilities to succeed this weekend.

"It's not that we were bad at the plate by any means this past weekend, but we left a lot of opportunities," Peterson said. "In the end, though, it is going to come down to our pitching and defense, and I think we'll do well there."
