The West Fargo boys' golf team was in the middle of the pack once again at the Eastern Dakota Conference regional meet on Wednesday, earning a team score of 331 and finishing fifth, which qualified them for today's state meet at Dakota Winds Golf Course in Hankinson.

"We really didn't look so good after nine holes," head coach Chuck Gad said. "Kids tend to give up after a tough start. but second nine was much better for everyone. All of them played really well."

The team was led, once again, by junior Riley Johnson, who ended with a score of 80, which was unfortunately his highest total of the season one week before he is set to defend his individual state title.

"Riley didn't have his best outing, and he was not happy," Gad said, laughing. "I think that was the first time I have seen him get flustered all season."

He also has the second-best average score in the conference with 74.8, just .2 points behind Fargo Shanley's Grady Meyer.

Johnson was followed by Cole Johnson and Nathan Kapaun, both of whom had a score of 83, and Chase Pulczinski with 85. Todd Dent and Drew Conzemius rounded out the team's score with an 88 and a 96, respectively.

"They were happy with how they played, and so was I," Gad said. "Our goal from the start of the year was to get to state, and we reached that goal. They went out and accomplished what they wanted, and as a coach, I am extremely happy and proud of them."
