The West Fargo football season drew to a close on Saturday with a 34-21 loss to defending champions Bismarck High in the first round of the playoffs. “I thought we played pretty well, but, boy, are they a good football team,” Packers head coach Jay Gibson said.
The Packers swim team finished its final dual of the regular season the same it finished almost every meet this season, topping the Fargo North Spartans 99-87 on Friday night. The team took first in eight of the 12 events against the Spartans. “It was a good chance to mix up our relay teams to see what works best for us,” head coach Sally Sautner said.
While their record says they are .500 on the season, the Packers volleyball team has looked better than that the past few weeks. Proof of that came last week, when the Packers won two of their three games. After falling to Fargo Davies 3-1 on Tuesday, the Pack bounced back with a 3-0 win over Grand Forks Central on Tuesday. “We came out really strong,” senior Kaitlyn Langerud said. Our recent loss gave us a little fire, and we really wanted to come out and win tonight.” “They were relaxed out there,” head coach Paula Pierson said.
The West Fargo girls swim team has refused to let its foot off the gas all season, and they continued their strong run on Saturday by besting Fargo Shanley, Wahpeton and Jamestown in the West Fargo Pentathlon with a team score of 363. In the pentathlon, all swimmers took part in the five events with 13 to 14 heats taking place for each event. “At first, we looked at it as five events for each swimmer to qualify in, but it really turned into a training opportunity,” head coach Sally Sautner said.
One point made the difference between the No. 1 seed and the No.
The Packers’ cross country season came to an end on Saturday, where both the boys and girls teams finished in ninth place of 18 teams at the state meet at Bjornson Park Golf Course in Valley City. “Injuries and illnesses prevented us from getting into the top five,” head coach Joe Bailey said. “but Jen, Parker and Keegan all ran tremendous races.” Freshman Jen Dufner led all Packers with an eighth-place finish on the girls side with a 4k time of 15:19.37.

West Fargo’s next elementary school finally has a name. In Monday’s meeting, the West Fargo School Board unanimously agreed to name the district’s next school Independence Elementary School. The name ties in with the district’s two most recent schools: Liberty Middle School and Freedom Elementary School. The district received 179 unique submissions from the community throughout September. Of those submissions, the top 16 were presented to the board during their Monday, Oct. 14, meeting.
