The Packers softball team's first two games against a North Dakota team were wildly successful, as they flattened the Valley City Hi-Liners 16-0 in the first game of their doubleheader and 15-0 in the second. Due to the overwhelming offense the team displayed, both games lasted only five innings each. Senior pitcher Jolene Woodbury was on the mound for both games and did not disappoint. She threw a one-hitter in the first game with seven strikeouts before a two-hit, eight-strikeout performance in the second game.
Spring is finally here, and teams are finally taking the field after being kept indoors for weeks by the extended winter. Perhaps no team was more affected than the boys golf team, who has only been able to manage limited indoor practice and cannot practice at Village Green Golf Course until next week. "We have been going (the Sports Bubble) about twice a week, but that costs money," head coach Chuck Gad said. Hopefully, we can get out to the driving range this week."
Now that the Packers' soccer team is finally able to take the field for regular season play - their first home game is tomorrow evening against the Grand Forks Central Knights - fans will see several familiar faces. Not the least among them is returning captain Alyssa Stedman. Stedman, the daughter of Brad and Patti Stedman, is set to start her fourth year on the varsity squad, her third as a starter and her second as a team captain.
The West Fargo Girls' tennis teams had yet another indoor match on Friday, easily beating the Fargo Shanley Deacons 7-2 at Courts Plus in Fargo. The Packers took all but two matches, earning victories in four singles matches and all three doubles matches. Packers Sammie Smith, Katie Baasch, Kaylee Stock and Jamie Freden were victorious in both singles and double competition. Despite that fact that a few teams haven't competed yet this season, the Packers are technically in second place in the EDC with a 2-0 record. Only the 3-0 Grand Forks Red River ranks higher.
The Packers softball has finally taken the field, but had to drive 250 miles to do so. The team traveled to North St. Paul on Saturday, where they beat Totino-Grace 7-1 before falling to North St. Paul 7-3 and Rice Lake (Wis.) 4-0. The highlight of the tournament came from junior pitcher Brittany Rheault, who struck out 20 batters in two games and picked up the win against Totino-Grace. In that game, both senior third baseman Lexi Lennon and sophomore outfielder Morgan Stirling hit home runs.
Many members of the West Fargo School District spent Thursday night celebrating the second annual "New Neighbor Night" in the West Fargo High School gym. The event was held to "increase cultural awareness and to build cultural pride among all attendees, regardless of their race, ethnicity or origin." Students and their families shared their culture and learned about different cultures, visited with friends and started growing relationships across the school and community.
The West Fargo School Board, during Monday's meeting, unanimously approved a contract with MBN Engineering of Fargo for development of plans and specifications for school security improvements to be made throughout the district this summer. The contract calls for MBN Engineering to design upgrades for the first phase of the security improvement before bids will be awarded, along with preparing plans and bid documents. Their services will cost the district $8,000.
When the Packers baseball season begins - and their state title defense - there will be plenty of fresh faces taking the field, but one familiar face will be that of senior ace pitcher Camran Bonnema. Bonnema is the son of Tim and Jody Bonnema. He has spent his entire life in the West Fargo area and, despite only playing baseball, loves all sports. The right-handed Bonnema was one of just three players to see the field regularly last season that wasn't a senior, finishing with a 9-1 record on the mound (including playoffs) and striking out 52 batters.
The Fargo Soccer Club's group of West Fargo girls continues to succeed, taking two titles and one second-place finish at the Brainerd Lakes Area Youth Soccer Association IceBreaker indoor soccer tournament on Saturday, April 6, in Brainerd, Minn.
