West Fargo pitcher Brittany Rheault was named the 2012-13 Gatorade North Dakota Softball Player of the Year.
The Sheyenne Mustangs Booster club welcomed the school's new coaches to parents and fans in a presentation on Monday night.
The West Fargo boys' golf team wrapped up its 2013 season on Wednesday with a seventh-place finish and a 36-hole score of 653 in the state tournament at Dakota Winds Golf Course in Hankinson, N.D.
The 11th annual Brian Mattson Invitational Golf Scramble Fundraiser will be taking place on Friday at the Leonard Country Club in Leonard, N.D. "(This event) all began as friends getting together to play a little golf together," said Brian Mattson, the event's organizer. "The next year, more friends showed up, and it eventually grew to the point where we decided we might as well raise money for West Fargo. This is something for our community to enjoy."
Two weeks ago, Amanda Levin cemented herself in Packers history. The junior trackster finished first in three different events - the 100-, 200- and 400-meter runs - at the North Dakota state track tournament.
The West Fargo boys' golf team was in the middle of the pack once again at the Eastern Dakota Conference regional meet on Wednesday, earning a team score of 331 and finishing fifth, which qualified them for today's state meet at Dakota Winds Golf Course in Hankinson. "We really didn't look so good after nine holes," head coach Chuck Gad said. "Kids tend to give up after a tough start. but second nine was much better for everyone. All of them played really well."
The Packers baseball came so close to defending their 2012 state championship, but fell short in a 3-2 loss to Fargo Shanley on Saturday in Jamestown. "We were one or two hits away from a different outcome," Packers head coach Brett Peterson said. "Sometimes, it just doesn't go your way." The team played exceptionally well leading up to Saturday's title game. They overwhelmed the Jamestown Bluejays 5-0 in Thursday's quarterfinal game, then shut out the Dickinson Midgets 3-0 in Friday's semifinal game.
West Fargo High School has named two new head coaches for the fall 2013 season. James Moe will be taking over for Doug Millar as the boys' soccer coach and Sally Sautner will take the helm as the girls' swim coach, replacing Marsha Dahl. Moe is currently the girls' soccer coach and served as an assistant coach under Millar for the boys' team last season. "Doug has been a part of the program 14+ years," Moe said. "That's a tough act to follow, but we plan to keep that West Fargo winning tradition alive and carry on what Doug has left behind."
Sixteen consecutive state championships. Just let that number sink in. The Packers claimed their 16th straight state crown on Saturday, beating Minot Bishop Ryan 1-0. Leading up to Saturday's championship game, the Pack topped the Bismarck High Demons 3-0 in the first round of the tournament on Thursday and the Bismarck Century Patriots 2-1 in Friday's second-round game. Combining for six runs in three games is a fairly low total for the Packers, as is totalling just 12 hits in that span, but the team's defense kept opponents in check.
The Packers tennis teams wrapped up its season with its best finish ever, taking second place in the state tournament on Friday. The team topped Bismarck Century 3-2 in the first round on Thursday, then topped the west's best team, Bismarck St. Mary, by the same score three hours later. "I would have never thought we would have a chance of beating St Mary, and we beat them," head coach Chad Anderson said. "It was pretty neat." The next day, the Packers met the Grand Forks Red River Roughriders in the state championship match, but ultimately lost 5-0.
