With the NHL season most likely not happening this year and the nearest major college hockey program roughly 80 miles away, local hockey fans like myself can, and probably should, look to the West Fargo Packers hockey teams to get their fix. Both the boys and girls team started their seasons over the weekend, with the boys' team topping the Bismarck Demons 5-1 on Friday before falling to the Bismarck Century Knights 3-2 on Saturday, and the girls' team running over the Devils Lake Firebirds 12-0 on Saturday. For the third year in a row, the West Fargo Packers cheer team took first place in the Small Varsity Division at the Fall NDCCA State Cheerleading Championship, which was held at Bismarck-St. Mary's High School on Saturday, Nov. 17. The Packers edged out the second-place Grand Forks Central Knights and the third-place Bismarck Demons to earn the title. The Packers junior varsity cheer also took first at the event, beating runners-up Grand Fork-Red River for the title. "The girls showed up to give the best performance they could," Packers cheer coach Jenni Stewart said.
Two years after graduating from West Fargo High School, former Packers' soccer players Austin Dillard and Jade Johnson continue to find success in the sport at Jamestown College. Forward Johnson and midfielder Dillard were key contributors in the Jimmies' championship victory in the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Conference Tournament. In the semifinals of the A.I.I. tournament against the University of Houston-Victoria, Johnson scored a goal late in the game to tie it up at three goals each.

The fall sports season for the Packers has officially come to an end over the weekend, as the volleyball team finished the North Dakota State Volleyball Tournament in fourth place. The tournament began for the Packers on Thursday against the Jamestown Blue Jays, who they beat in three games (25-21, 25-19, 25-22). In Thursday's game, the Packers were led by Amanda Levin, who had 15 kills, and Christina Bruenjes, who had 12.
Last year, the West Fargo Packers wrestling team finished 21-0 and won the North Dakota State Championship.

The Packers swim team wrapped up their 2012 season over the weekend on a positive note, as they took first in two events and fourth overall in the North Dakota State Meet. The highlight of the event for the Packers 200 freestyle relay team - consisting of Brianna Faul, Julissa Johnson, Danica Dutt and Hallie Peterson - taking first place with a time of 1:39.9. "They were just awesome," head coach Marsha Dahl said. "They set a new team record, and were just shy of the state record." Dutt also took first place - for the second time - in the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.09.
The West Fargo High School Varsity cheer team took first place at the UCA Regional tournament on Saturday, Nov. 3, in Minnetonka, Minn. Their first-place victory earned them a bid to the National High School Cheerleading Championship (NHSCC) in Florida this February in Florida. "We knew that stakes were high and that it was our only chance to get to nationals," coach Jenni Stewart said. "They just stepped up and really pulled it together in the end.
The Packers wrestling season does not begin until the end of the month, but the team has already earned a promising achievement, as they have been ranked 50th in the nation, according to InterMat Wrestling's "Fab 50" rankings. The reigning state champions finished the 2011-2012 season with a record of 21-0 and had three individual state champions, all of whom are returning for this season. The Packers are the only team in North Dakota in the "Fab 50." InterMat Wrestling also ranked senior Preston Lehmann eighth in the nation in the 195-pound division. Lehmann ended last season with a recor
