High schools usually celebrate homecoming week in the fall, where a king and queen are named from the senior class and alumni come home to watch the football game on Friday night. Sheyenne High School doesn't have a senior class, alumni or a varsity sports program yet, but the Mustang Booster Club is still giving students a way to celebrate with Stampede Week, which will begin on Monday, Sept 23.
The Packers' cross country teams had a strong outing on Thursday afternoon at Northwood Golf Course. The girls' team finished first among the 19 teams with a score of 43, and the boys' team finished second with a score of 46. Out of 111 runners, the girls had seven runners in the top 20. They were led by freshman Jen Dufner, who finished third with a time of 16 minutes, 41 seconds. Eighth grader Madison Urlaub was only seven seconds behind Dufner, finishing fifth.
The Packers tennis team continues its strong start to the season after beating the Fargo South Bruins 8-1 on Thursday. "We are 3-0 for the first time since I have been here," head coach Chad Anderson said. "We have a really good team this year." Junior Keyan Farahmand and senior Brendan Walker highlighted the team, beating their opponents in straight sets. Farahmand also won his doubles match in straight sets, teaming with junior Brady Ballweber.
After a 14-5-2 overall record and fourth-place state finish last fall, the Packers will look to build on that success this year. However, the team lost 12 seniors from last year, and they finished last week off with two tough losses to Fargo North and Fargo Shanley. Despite these things head coach James Moe is not discouraged. "We have a good group of kids that work hard," Moe said. "This is going to be a big year for us, because I think we have a chance to be very successful."
The West Fargo golf team saw a slight improvement last week at Rose Creek Golf Course, as they finished sixth out of eight teams, with a score of 369. "We played better as a team," head coach Dan Wolf. "We were only a handful of strokes away from fourth place, even though we took sixth." Senior Ashley Bixby tied for first with Davies' Jennifer Marsh, finishing her day with a score of 74.
In a special meeting last Wednesday, the West Fargo School Board unanimously approved a two-year contract with the teachers union. "By and large, I think we are excited to get teachers off and running on the correct schedule at appropriate wages, and we are happy to have it in time for school," human resources director Robin Hill said. The contract gives teachers a 3.06 percent increase in salary and benefits for this year, next year, that number rises to 6.26 percent.
