Jan. 24, 1925-Sept. 12, 2008 Virginia Dixon, 83, of Fargo, died Friday, September 12, 2008, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Virginia, the daughter of Ernest and Esther (Malm) Jordahl, was born Jan. 24, 1925, in Detroit Lakes, and grew up in Lake Park, where she graduated as valedictorian of her high school class. Virginia graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1947, and was employed as a social worker in Yellow Medicine County, Minn., before she married Bob Slater of Aberdeen, S.D.
Dec. 16, 1922-Sept. 8, 2008 Former Fargo resident Marian E. Strand, 85, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, September 8, 2008 at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo. Marion Elaine Cates was born to Eldred and Florence (Quance) Cates on Dec. 16, 1922 in St. Paul. As a young girl, she moved to Fargo, where she received her education, graduating from Fargo Central High School. Marian worked for the Weather Bureau at Hector Airport in Fargo during World War II. On Oct. 26, 1946 she married Duane R. Strand in Fargo. They made their home in Fargo until moving to the San Francisco Bay area in 1961.
June 7, 1923-Sept. 8, 2008 Della J. Peterson, 85, of Moorhead, passed away unexpectedly at home on Monday, September 8, 2008. Della Jane Askegaard was born to Clark and Sena (Thompson) Askegaard on June 7, 1923 in Comstock, Minn., where she grew up and graduated from high school. She then went on to Moorhead State College, where she received her teacher's certificate, and went on to teach in rural Baker, Minn. On Oct. 20, 1943, Della married Lauren Peterson in Comstock. Together, they settled on the farm near Baker and raised eight children.
Feb. 24, 1927-Sept. 2, 2008 Former Dilworth resident Gerhardt Busche 81, of Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, September 2, 2008 in Detroit Lakes. Gerhardt was born to Louis and Amanda (Wagner) Busche on Feb. 24, 1927, on the family farm near Litchville. He grew up and attended school in that area. Gerhardt married Verna May Eggert in Detroit Lakes on July 19, 1948. They lived in Dumont, Minn., until 1955 when they moved to Fargo. Gerhardt worked for Armour and Company in West Fargo for 13 years.
DETROIT LAKES - A religion is a set of beliefs and practices often organized around supernatural and moral claims, and often codified as prayer, ritual and religious law. Religion also encompasses ancestral or cultural traditions, writings, history and mythology, as well as personal faith and mystic experience. The term "religion" refers to both the personal practices related to communal faith and to group rituals and communication stemming from shared conviction. There are many, many different religious beliefs in this world of ours. To me, I like to preach about religious tolerance.
Oct. 1, 1919-Feb. 16, 2008 Norman O. Siekas, 88, of De-troit Lakes, died Saturday, Febru-ary 16, 2008 at his home, with his dedicated wife of 65 years by his side. Norman Olaf Siekas was born to Arvid and Jennie (Houtari) Siekas on Oct. 1, 1919 in Han-cock, Mich. At age 12, he moved with his family to Tapiola, Mich., where he graduated from John Doelle High School in 1939. Norman moved to Detroit, Mich., in 1940, and started his career with Ex-Cell-O Corporation in 1941. Norman married Marian I. Eg-gleston on July 1, 1942 in Detroit, Mich. He was drafted into the U.S.
DETROIT LAKES - Sen. Keith Langseth and Rep. Paul Marquart will hold a town meeting in Detroit Lakes Saturday, Feb. 9, to hear from area residents on state issues. The meeting will be from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Detroit Lakes City Hall. Langseth, chair of the Senate Capital Investment Committee, and Marquart, House Property Tax Relief Division chairman, will host five meetings around the area to hear residents' ideas and concerns regarding property taxes, education and transportation funding, capital investment projects, health care reform and other issues. Sept. 14, 1975-Jan. 11, 2008 Stanley R. Prenta, Jr., 32, of Detroit Lakes, died Friday, January 11, 2008 at his residence in Detroit Lakes. Stanley Raymond Prenta, Jr., was born to Stanley Sr. and Geraldine (Mayberry) Prenta on Sept. 14, 1975 in Northridge, Calif. He had lived in Lake Park and later moved to Barnesville, Minn., with his father in 1982. Throughout his life, Stanley traveled many journeys, but loved his family; especially his daughter, Desiree.
March 28, 1921-Jan. 14, 2008 Former Callaway, Audubon and Lake Park resident Ralph A. Matter, 86, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, January 14, 2008 at St. Mary's Nursing Center in Detroit Lakes. Ralph Alfred Matter was born to Alfred and Ruth (Frantz) Matter on March 28, 1921 at Wabasso, Minn. As a young boy, he moved with his family to rural Callaway, and attended rural Callaway schools. In 1944 he began farming with his family. He served with the U.S. Army, 1945-46. Following his discharge, he returned to rural Callaway, where he continued to farm. Ralph married Joyce Flynn on Feb.
Feb. 9, 1923-Jan. 14, 2008 Beatrice L. Jacobson, 84, of Audubon, passed away Monday, January 14, 2008, at St. Mary's Regional Health Center, Detroit Lakes. Beatrice was born to Theodore and Agnes (Swinland) Larson on Feb. 9, 1923 in Alberta, Canada. She moved to the United States in 1940. On Aug. 22, 1942 she married Walter Jacobson in Hendrum, Minn. Together they settled and raised their family in Audubon.
