June 14, 1947-May 6, 2009 Timothy L. Sweeney, 61, of Detroit Lakes, died Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at St. Mary's Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes. Timothy L. Sweeney was born to Raymond F. and Elsie (Albright) Sweeney on June 14, 1947 in Fargo. In 1953, the family moved to the northwest side of Floyd Lake in rural Detroit Lakes. Tim attended Holy Rosary Catholic School and was a 1966 graduate of Detroit Lakes High School. In the summer of 1966, Tim enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Henry Clay (SSBN625), attaining the rank of TM2 (SU).
Nov. 29, 1933-April 27, 2009 John G. "Jack" Wilen, 75, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday April 27, 2009 at St. Mary's Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes. John "Jack" Wilen was born to Eldon and Marcella (Murray) Wilen on Nov. 29, 1933 in Knoxville, Iowa. As a young child he and his family moved to Los Angeles, Calif., where Jack grew up and received his education.
Jan. 12, 1940-April 27, 2009 Margaret L. "Marge" Anderson, 69, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, April 27, 2009 at the Perham Memorial Home in Perham. Margaret L. Kessel was born to Raphael and Margaret (Klein) Kessel on Jan. 12, 1940 in Dickinson, N.D., where she grew up and attended school, graduating from Dickinson High School in 1958. She then moved to Minneapolis, where she worked for the Northwest Bank for a short time. On Sept. 10, 1960 Marge married Merlin Anderson in Dickinson. They made their home in Crookston, Minn.,, where she worked at the Crookston National Bank.
June 19, 1930-April 28, 2009 Former Wolf Lake resident Rueben C. Hanson, 78, of Frazee, died Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at his home, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Rueben Charles Hanson was born to Hans and Selma (Halvorson) Hanson on June 19, 1930, near Ulen. He attended country school near Hitterdal and, in 1938, his family moved to Glyndon, Minn., where he also attended school. He worked on a farm for his aunt and uncle near Gibbon, Minn., from 1946-48. Rueben then moved back to Glyndon, where he worked on construction jobs.
March 20, 1919-April 27, 2009 Former Wolf Lake resident Mary S. Karppinen, 90, of Frazee, died on Monday, April 27, 2009 at the Frazee Care Center. Mary Sophia Aho was born to Henry and Sophia (Haapaniemi) Aho on March 20, 1919 in Wolf Lake. She was raised on a farm near Wolf Lake, where she attended country school. She married Henry Karppinen on Sept. 13, 1941 in Detroit Lakes. They farmed in the Toad Lake area until they retired.
April 3, 1942-April 25, 2009 Former Detroit Lakes resident Karen M. (Baker) Boomgarden, 67, of Redwood Falls, passed away Saturday, April 25, 2009 at her home, following a battle with cancer. Karen M. Baker was born to Melvin and Margaret (Ebbengay) Baker on April 3, 1942 in Wayne, Neb. Karen and her family moved to Minnesota in 1946. She attended Brewster High School, graduating in 1959. On Dec. 18, 1960, Karen married Peter Boomgarden in Heron Lake, Minn. Together, the couple moved to Detroit Lakes and later to Ivanhoe, Minn.
Oct. 18, 1915-April 27, 2009 Randolph V. "Randy" Vernon Buck, 93, of Frazee, died on Monday, April 27, 2009 at St. Mary's Regional Health Center in Detroit Lakes. Randolph Vernon Buck was born to Lars and Tekla Buck on Oct. 18, 1915 in Pelican Rapids. He was baptized and confirmed in Pelican Valley Church. He attended school in Pelican Rapid,s and then moved to Deer Creek for a short time. Randy served in the U.S. Army for four years during World War II. He married Luella (Albright) Vestal in 1947 and joined St. Paul's Lutheran Church-Loon Lake shortly thereafter.
Sept. 1, 1924-Dec. 15, 2008 Bernard "Bernie" H. Nugent, 84, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, December 15, 2008, in Innovis Hospital, Fargo, N.D., as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Bernard Herman Nugent, known as "Bernie," was born to Irvin and Gertrude (Meyer) Nugent on Sept. 1, 1924, in Moorhead. After serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II, he returned to Moorhead, where he worked in construction and was a fireman. He married Mary Mae Bellefeuille of Callaway on June 1, 1948.
Jan. 1, 1928-April 23, 2009 Former Breckenridge resident Theresa Eiter Braun, 81, of Perham, died Thursday, April 23, 2009 at Perham Memorial Nursing Home in Perham. Theresa was born the daughter of William and Johanna (Neppl) Underberg on Jan. 1, 1928 in Kent, Minn. She attended grade school at Kent and Brushvale, Minn. She went on to school in Techny, Ill., and Lincoln, Neb., and finished her junior and senior years at St. Francis Academy in Hankinson, N.D., graduating from there in 1945. Following graduation, she worked at St. Francis Hospital. On Nov.
Dec. 4, 1965-April 22, 2009 Former Detroit Lakes resident Todd L. Goodhart, 43, of Milbank, S.D., died on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, in Milbank. Todd Luverne Goodhart was born to James and Shirley (Anderson) Goodhart on December 4, 1965, in Ortonville. He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith at First English Lutheran Church in Ortonville. Todd attended school in Big Stone City, S.D., until the eighth grade, when he transferred to Ortonville schools, and graduated from there in 1984.
