Nov. 20, 1921-April 23, 2009 Mary Lou H. Dalluge, 87, of Frazee, died on Thursday, April 23, 2009 at the Frazee Care Center. Mary Lou Helen Simon was born to John and Vannie (Mills) Simon on Nov. 20, 1921 in Mount Vernon, S.D. In 1923, her family moved to Mitchell, S.D. She started school in 1927 in Plate, S.D. The family then moved to Alexandria, S.D., in 1929 and Mary Lou graduated from country school in 1935. She attended high school in Alexandria, Mitchell and Ethan, S.D., and eventually graduated in Emmetsburg, Iowa, in 1939.
Aug. 23, 1919-April 22, 2009 Dolores L. Belz, 89, of Detroit Lakes, died Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Dolores Lucille Anderson was born to Arthur and Anna (Utz) Anderson on Aug. 23, 1919 near Buxton, N.D. She was raised near Luce, Minn., and attended rural country school. In 1940, Dolores married Harold Belz at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Frazee. Harold worked for the railroad, which allowed the couple to experience life in several small towns in North Dakota and Minnesota.
Dec. 24, 1937-April 6, 2009 Felix Hamlin, 71, of Frazee, died on Monday, April 6, 2009 in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, N.D. Felix was born the son of Felix and Susan (Kloeppel) Hamlin on Dec. 24, 1937 in White Earth. He grew up in the Fosston and Crookston, Minn., area and lived in Texas, Iowa and Oklahoma until moving back to Minnesota in 1989. He had lived in Frazee for the past 18 years. Felix drove semi over the road for most of his adult life. He was also a golden glove boxer.
March 9, 1924-April 20, 2009 Vernon R. Koskela, 85, of Menahga, passed away Monday, April 20, 2009 at the Green Pine Acres Nursing Home in Menahga. Vernon Reino Koskela was born to John and Katie (Hillukka) Koskela on March 9, 1924 in Wolf Lake Township, west of Menahga. He attended country school in Dist. 72-2, near his home. As a young man, Vern helped on his family's dairy farm, taking over its operation and management after his father's death. He married Helen A.
Oct. 14, 1946-April 20, 2009 Daryl W. Nelson, 62, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, April 20, 2009 at his residence, under care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Daryl Wallace Nelson was born to Wallace and Caroline (Asmus) Nelson on Oct. 18, 1946 in Fergus Falls. He was baptized and confirmed at Tonseth Lutheran Church in Friberg Township, Otter Tail County. Daryl received his education at Roosevelt Senior High School in Fergus Falls, graduating in 1964. He enlisted in the United States Navy, and following his honorable discharge he went to work for Gerald Evenson in Pelican Rapids.
June 2, 1937-April 11, 2009 Lloyd V. Benson, 71, of Waubun, died Saturday, April 11, 2009, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Waubun. Lloyd Vernon Benson was born to Edna and Vernon Benson on June 2, 1937. He was raised east of Waubun, with his brother, Wayne Benson, and his sister, Beatrice (Benson) Purdy. In his early years, Lloyd worked as a logger and a construction worker. Later he worked at the Waubun Creamery, which was owned by the Kersting family, starting as a milk truck driver and later in the creamery.
May 20, 1958-April 15, 2009 John L "Squirrel" Critt, 50, of Frazee, died Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo. John Lee Critt was born to Beatrice Critt on May 20, 1958 in White Earth, where he attended school through the 10th grade, then moved to Frazee, where he graduated from Frazee High School in 1978. Following graduation he worked as a welder in a number of communities in the Western U.S. He returned to Frazee in the early 1980s. John enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family; especially his nieces and nephews.
March 29, 1919-April 19, 2009 Ernest A. Grani, 90, of Lake Park, died Sunday, April 19, 2009 in Viking Manor Nursing Home, Ulen. Ernest was born to Edwin and Annette (Quam) Grani, on March 29, 1919 in Eglon Township, Clay County. After his mother's death when he was three years old, he lived with his father on the farm and attended school in Eglon Township. Ernest was confirmed at Solem Lutheran Church. In February 1945, he entered the U.S. Army and was stationed in Italy. While in the Army, he was in the 88th Inventory Division.
May 15, 1959-April 11, 2009 John Fagre, 49, of Waubun, died Saturday, April 11, 2009 as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Waubun. John Stanley Fagre was born the son of Stanley and Darlene (Olson) Fagre on May 15, 1959 in Detroit Lakes. John attended and graduated from Waubun High School in 1978. After high school he, along with his brother Jeff and cousin, Doug Nelson, joined the United States Navy. He spent part of his tour of duty in Scotland and Florida, while working in the Navy shipyards. John married Brenda Little on Dec. 18, 1982 in Macon, Ga.
A.H. "Whitey" Oberg, 87, of Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Calif., passed away on Friday, April 10, 2009, at his home, with his wife Luella and oldest daughter Susan by his side. Whitey met Luella Henderson at White Earth Lake, and they were married on Sept. 22, 1949; they remained married for 60 years.
