Duane was born to Samuel and Florence (Iverson) Jones on Jan. 25, 1930 in St. Paul. He was raised in Lake Park, by his mother Florence and stepfather, Melvin Mikkelson. Duane married Judith Litzau on June 7, 1959 at First Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes. They made their home in the Toad Lake area.
July 11, 1919-March 6, 2008 Lifelong Hawley resident Grace Riedberger passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 6, 2008 at 9:30 p.m. in Detroit Lakes at the Emmanuel Community, surrounded by her loving family. Grace Whaley was born to Ray and Etta (McDonald) Whaley on July 11, 1919 in Hawley. In 1938, she graduated from Hawley High School, where she participated in sports, drama and music. Her favorite memory of high school was playing Rosalie in the play "Polished Pebbles" as a senior. On Jan. 8, 1939 Grace married her high school sweetheart, Forrest (Dit) Riedberger.
Aug. 31, 1924-March 6, 2008 Leona V.Erickson, 83, of Detroit Lakes, MN, passed away on Thursday, March 6, 2008, at St. Mary's Regional Health Center in Detroit Lakes. Leona Vernette Erickson was born to John and Hilda (Olson) Erickson on Aug. 31, 1924, at their home south of Lake Park. She grew up near Lake Park, attending country school. Following high school she moved to California, where she lived and worked most of her life until more recently moving to Detroit Lakes. Leona was always very active and the church was very important to her.
June 10, 1918-March 2, 2008 June Hagen-Sorter, 89, of Roseau, Minn., died Sunday, March 2, 2008. June Bernice Dunham was born to Edward and Cora Dunham on June 10, 1918 in Drayton, N.D. She was the youngest of six children. The Dunham family moved to a homestead by Wannaska, Minn., in September 1920. June attended Wannaska School for three years, then went to the Grimstead School for five years. Her brothers and father made a sled for the horse to pull them to school in winter. Sometimes they walked the two and a half miles.
May 24, 1928-March 2, 2008 Billie L. Rosell, 79, of West Fargo, died Sunday, March 2 after a battle with breast cancer. She was under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Billie Lucille McChesney was born to Richard and Clara (Gaultier) McChesney on May 24, 1928 in Seattle, Wash. In 1944, Billie married Elmer Rosell in Seattle. They moved to a farm near Audubon and in 1996, they retired to West Fargo. Elmer passed away Sept. 23, 1998. Billie loved to do needlepoint and embroidery. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, reading and playing computer games.
Jan. 31, 1918-Feb. 27, 2008 Ruth F. Haugen, 90, of Detroit Lakes passed away on Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at Emmanuel Nursing Home. Ruth was born to Chester and Florence (Jorgeson) Churchill on Jan. 31, 1918 in Foreston, Minn. The family moved to Becker County when Ruth was just a toddler. She attended country school and then was married at a young age. After her children were born, she and her family moved to Sunnyside, Wash., returning to Detroit Lakes in 1946.
July 22, 1964-March 1, 2008 Former Detroit Lakes resident Donald R. Ferrari, 43, of Clitherall, Minn., died Saturday, March 1, 2008 at Clitherall. Donald was born to Kenneth and Shelbia (Sindle) Ferrari on July 22, 1964 in Fort Smith, Ark., where he was raised and educated. He owned and operated a used car dealership in Fort Smith, prior to moving to Detroit Lakes in 1998. Don then became a self-employed carpet layer. Don married Kathy Hokenson-Schmidt on April 3, 2003 in South Dakota. Their daughter, Haylee was born on Sept.
Feb. 19, 1915-Feb. 28, 2008 Roberta McDougall, 93, of Detroit Lakes, died Thursday, February 28, 2008 at St. Mary's Regional Health Center in Detroit Lakes. Roberta Jones was born to Robert and Bernice (Case) Jones on Feb. 19, 1915 in Milbank, S.D. She was baptized Jan. 2, 1916 and confirmed Feb. 19, 1933 at Christ Episcopal Parish in Milbank. Roberta graduated from Milbank High School in 1933, after which she attended South Dakota State College in Brookings, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1938.
Feb. 10, 1914-Feb. 23, 2008 James R. "Jim" Evans, 94, of Vergas, died Saturday, February 23 at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Fergus Falls. James Ross Evans, known as Jim, was born to John R. and Clara "Callie" (Ross) Evans on Feb. 10, 1914 on the family farm in Johnson County, Neb. He attended elementary school in Rose Hill and high school in Tecumseh, Neb. Jim furthered his education by taking courses in diesel mechanics. Jim married Margaret "Peg" Ballard in Lincoln, Neb., on July 2, 1939. He worked for the Nebraska Department of Roads until he joined the Navy SeaBees in 1941.
March 10, 1929-Feb. 26, 2008 Former White Earth Lake resident Henry J. "Jim" Sherman, 78, passed away peacefully in the presence of his loving family on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008 in Coronado, Calif. Henry James Sherman was born March 10, 1929 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Henry Alvord Sherman and Margaret (Schermerhorn) Sherman, the eldest of three children. Jim graduated from Central High School, Tulsa, in 1947 and then attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), graduating in 1951 with a degree in geology. He then served in the U.S.
