Doris M. Melby, 79, of Hawley, died peacefully Tuesday, December 4, 2007 at the Wyoming home of her son Royal. She is survived by her children, Dr. Lorrie (Stephen Bailey) Melby, Randy (Victoria Stickney) Melby, Royal (Terri Melby-Schaefer) Melby; four grandchildren; siblings, Lorraine Slininger, Glenn Benesh, Marvin Benesh, Clifford Benesh and Janice Miller; several nieces, nephews, family and friends. Preceding her in death were her parents, John and Clara (Durling) Benesh; husband Russell Melby; and siblings, Eleanor deVries, Arnold Benesh and Kenneth Benesh.
Feb. 20, 1923-Nov. 30, 2007 Della R. Stiyer, 84, of Ogema, died Friday, November 30, 2007 at St. Mary's Regional Health Center in Detroit Lakes, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Della Rachel Yoder was born to Jacob and Nettie (Forner) Yoder on Feb. 20, 1923 in Ladysmith, Wis. At age six, she moved with her family to Wheaton, Minn., and then to Sugar Bush Township, rural Ogema in 1946. She attended teacher training and taught in a rural Wheaton school for a year prior to marrying Louis "Lee" Stiyer. The wedding took place on Dec. 24, 1943 in Wheaton.
Feb. 9, 1922-Dec. 1, 2007 Former Detroit Lakes resident Mary R. Peterson, age 85, of Faribault, Minn., died of congestive heart failure on Saturday, December 1, 2007 at the St. Lucas Care Center in Faribault. Mary Rebecca Cowles was born to Dr. Edgar and Anna Cowles on Feb. 9, 1922 in Detroit Lakes. She graduated from Holmes High School in Detroit Lakes in 1940. She married Lawrence "Pete" Peterson in 1941. They moved to the Minnetonka area, where her husband owned a construction company. Mary worked in Wayzata at Hillcrest Nursing Home in the physical therapy department.
July 31, 1937-Nov. 26, 2007 Bill E. Archer, 70, of Story, Wyo., passed away on Monday, November 26, 2007 at the historical Fort Mackenzie VA Medical Center in Sheridan, Wyo. Bill was born to Lloyd and Elsie (Walker) Archer on July 31, 1937 in Sheridan. He attended school in Story and Sheridan, Wyo., and went on to graduate from the University of Minnesota. He served in the U.S. Armed Forces during the Korean Conflict, and married Constance Schaefer in Sheridan on July 6, 1962. They raised four children together. Bill and Connie returned to live in his beloved Big Horn Mountains in 1995.
Jan. 16, 1914-Nov. 26, 2007 Verna E. Carlisle, 93, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, November 26, 2007 at Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes. Verna Estella Tommerdahl was born to Tillie (Dahl) and Oliver Tommerdahl on Jan. 16, 1914 in Erie, Minn. (Pennington County). She was the oldest daughter of 11 children. In 1929, during the depression, they moved to the Detroit Lakes area. Being the oldest, Verna was called upon to help her mother raise her younger siblings. Verna married Joseph Carlisle on Oct. 16, 1940 in Erie Township.
Aug. 27, 1922-Nov. 26, 2007 Gordon St. Claire, 85, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, November 26, 2007, in the Minnesota Veterans Home, Fergus Falls. Gordon B. St. Claire was born August 27, 1922, in Callaway, where he was raised by his great grandmother. At 15 years of age, he moved to Fargo to live with his mother. In February 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Army with the 164th Infantry, and served in Guadalcanal and the Northern Solomons during World War II. Gordon married Lois Hellem on Jan. 6, 1945, in St. Augustine, Fla.
Ernest C. Johnson, 67, of Frazee, died Monday, November 26, 2007 at the Frazee Care Center, Frazee. Arrangements are being handled by the West-Kjos Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes. July 24, 1921-Nov. 26, 2007 Jane Johnston Sheryak Davey, 86, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, November 26, 2007 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Jane Johnston was born to George and Marjorie (Flory) Johnston on July 24, 1921 in Anderson, Ind. Jane started her career as a vocalist in dance bands around the country. In 1945 she moved to Fargo. While working for WDAY, she hosted Red Owl Theatre and was a spokeswoman for many commercial products. In 1960 she moved to the Twin Cities and started working in radio broadcasting on KSTP.
Feb. 1, 1921-Nov. 25, 2007 Rose R. Iverson, 86, of Detroit Lakes, died Sunday, November 25, 2007 at Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes. Rose Ruth Bastman was born to Benjamin and Ida Hanson Bastman on Feb. 1, 1921 in Lake Park, Iowa. The family moved to Worthington, Minn., when Rose was 13, and she resided there until her marriage to Olof in 1971. They lived in Wolf Point, Mont., and then Fosston, Minn., before moving to Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, in 1998. Rose loved her family very much.
Feb. 8, 1918-Nov. 23, 2007 Ted Kiehl, 89, rural Detroit Lakes, died Friday, November 23, 2007 at St. Mary's Regional Health Center, Detroit Lakes. Ted was born to Gottlieb and Theophile (Wilde) Kiehl on Feb. 8, 1918 in Detroit Lakes. He grew up on the family farm in Becker County, and attended school in rural Detroit Lakes. As a young adult he was a mechanic and hired out for farm work. Ted married Alice Lundeen on June 5, 1939 in Sisseton, S.D. Ted and Alice made their home in rural Detroit Lakes, where they bought a farmstead to farm.
