June 25, 1937-May 12, 2009 Duyane J. Foltz, 71, of Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at St. Mary's Innovis Health, Detroit Lakes. Duyane was born the son of Joseph and Marie (Veik) Foltz on June 25, 1937, in Humphrey, Neb. At the age of 11, Duyane moved with his family to Frazee, where he continued his education, graduating in 1955. As a young man, Duyane enlisted in the United States Air Force on June 14, 1955. He served as a tail gunner on a B-36 during his time of service. Duyane married Faye Young on Dec. 9, 1958 in Puerto Rico, Mexico on the Ramey Air Force Base.
Margaret R. "Peggy" Backus, 78, of Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at St. Mary's Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes. Peggy was a long time resident of Chippewa Falls, Wis., and in recent years resided at Lamplighter Manor in Detroit Lakes. She wrote poetry, was a talented musician, and loved her poodles and her children with a passion. Peggy was also a very faithful person, who shared her faith openly with others.
Dec. 28, 1921-April 15, 2009 Thielma J. "Bairn" Blanding, 87, of Detroit Lakes, died Wednesday, April 15, 2009 in her home, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Thielma Jean Bairnson was born to Dr. and Mrs. George Bairnson on Dec. 28, 1921 in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Following high school in Cedar Falls, she attended Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., and went on to graduate from the University of Minnesota in 1943 with a degree in medical bacteriology.
William K. Smith, 87, of Detroit Lakes died Monday, May 11, 2009 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Services and interment will be in Michigan. The David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes has been serving the family. Online guest registration is available at www.daviddonehower.com .
June 25, 1925-May 11, 2009 Erling R. Eide, 83, of Frazee, died Monday, May 11, 2009 at the Frazee Care Center in Frazee. Erling Raymond Eide was born to Jacob and Clara (Nelson) Eide on June 25, 1925 in Oslo, Minn. He grew up near Oslo, where he attended a rural country school. When Erling was 14 years old, he worked as a farmhand for his brother-in-law on the family farm. He saved up enough money to purchase his first car and at the age of 15, he traveled to San Francisco, Calif., to work on the loading docks near the Pacific Ocean.
March 2, 1945-March 9, 2009 Cheryl A. Peterson, 64, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, March 9, 2009 at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo. Cheryl was born to Robert and Louise (Horton) Peterson on March 2, 1945 in San Francisco, Calif. She was raised and educated in Detroit Lakes, graduating from Detroit Lakes High School in 1963. She attended the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1967 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Cheryl began working for the Social Security Administration as a claims administrator in Connecticut and Massachusetts.
April 22, 1925-May 8, 2009 Merlin E. Anderson, 84, of Frazee, died Friday, May 8, 2009 at the Frazee Care Center. Merlin E. Anderson was born to Ernest G. and Alice Christopherson Anderson on April 22, 1925 in Hettinger County, N.D., where he attended country school. Merlin farmed with his dad until 1948, when he married Betty L. Scrogham of Mott, N.D. During their honeymoon they purchased a farmstead north of Detroit Lakes, near Oak Lake, where they lived for 50 years. Early in life, Merlin raised sheep, beef, and various grain crops and milked dairy cattle.
Nov. 29, 1947-May 9, 2009 Larry N. Engen, 61, of Detroit Lakes, died Saturday, May 9, 2009 in his residence. Larry N. Engen was born to Herbran (Bob) and Gilma (Heier) Engen on Nov. 29, 1947 in Hawley. As a young boy, he moved to Detroit Lakes, where he received his education, graduating from Detroit Lakes High School in 1965. He married Ruth E. Coughlin on Sept. 5, 1969 in Detroit Lakes. Over the years, Larry worked at Gasport and also Lakes Ford in Detroit Lakes. He then started his career driving truck. He hauled the U.S. Mail, petroleum, turkeys, and chickens.
Feb. 12, 1926-May 4, 2009 Verna R. Nysetvold, 83, of Twin Valley, died Monday, May 4, 2009, at the Palliative Care Unit in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo. Verna Ruth Knutson was born the daughter of Ole and Margaret (Syvertsen) Knutson on Feb. 12, 1926, in Ulen, where she grew up and attended school. As a young woman, Verna graduated from Moorhead Teacher's School. She taught at a rural school near Sebeka before marrying Arnt Nysetvold on April 10, 1949 in Ulen. The couple made their home in Twin Valley, where they raised seven children.
