By Karen Huber I have garden tomatoes I need to use, so I perused my recipe files for a few favorites that will work nicely to dwindle my not-so-large supply. Homemade salsa is one of the best ways, coupling the savory sauce with those salty scoop chips. The "Fresh Salsa" is also a recipe I've made countless times. It takes a few minutes to make and such a short time to devour, I usually make a double batch because if there is any left it keeps nicely in the fridge/ If you aren't a fan of cilantro, you can substitute parsley instead.

West Fargo Public Works officials have asked that everyone refrain from watering their lawns, gardens, trees, you name it, in West Fargo until further notice. The ban is necessitated by water usage that continues to increase even though residents and businesses are supposed to be following odd-even day watering guidelines. One of the city’s wells is also down for maintenance and is expected to be up and running in two weeks times.
Even though it was a stifling hot day, I decided to rely on my oven for our Sunday evening meal. I was anxious to try another “Food Network” recipe that not only sounded deliciously simple but had also received rave reviews from many who had tried it and took the time to share their favorable critiques on the website. I am a huge chicken and dumpling fan, so this Chicken Pot Pie recipe, rich with meat and its pastry-like crust was definitely right up my alley. The recipe called for cooked chicken but I had a bag of chicken breasts so that is what I started with, simply microwaving tha
When we say it’s Labor Day weekend do we really give any thought to the actual meaning behind the observance? To me, it’s the exact opposite of laboring, instead a time to take it easy, relax and picnic or party with family and friends as the final “hurrah” of summer. But then again, that was the original intent, a well-deserved respite for “laborers” — a break from daily work in an effort to rejuvenate. From a historical standpoint, Labor Day goes back a long way, to the first holiday recorded on Sept.
A three-day run of special benefit activities are in the works to assist Cody Marthaller, a lifelong West Fargo resident, diagnosed a year ago with a rare form of lung cancer. Cody, 31, is a 2001 graduate of West Fargo High School.
With school starting yesterday, there was added vigilance by the West Fargo Police Department to ensure that everyone’s safety was the high priority. Toward that end the department assigned patrol offices to each of the West Fargo School District’s 11 schools as new sessions began Aug. 27. That special patrolling will also extend to the kindergarten facilities when their classes resume Thursday, Aug.
West Fargo City Commissioners approved the city's 2014 preliminary budget Monday night that has expenditures totaling $48,172,047, up from approximately $35 million in 2013. Even though the figures are higher, the city continues to ward off any property tax increases because of the continued upsurge in property valuation due to the ongoing residential and commercial construction. The approval sets the mill levy at 89.34 -- a 1.09 decrease over the previous year. The projected value of a mill for 2014 is $88,523, an increase of $8,615 per mill over 2013.
Where has the summer gone? A clear sign that the season is almost over is when school starts. In West Fargo that is next Tuesday (Aug. 27) already, in advance of the Labor Day holiday. With school starting, also comes the obvious increase in traffic in school zone areas and the need for awareness about safe driving practices.
