The Packers baseball team finished its first week of the season with three conference wins and one non-conference loss. After a 10-5 loss to Moorhead on Tuesday, April 30, the team took both games of a doubleheader against Fargo Shanley on Thursday before a 4-1 victory against Grand Forks Central on Friday. In Friday’s game, senior pitcher Camran Bonnema struck out 15 batters to pick up the win against the Deacons.
West Fargo Sheyenne High School Activities Director Ross Richards has announced that Tom Kirchoffner has accepted the position of boys’ basketball coach and Brent Hintz has accepted the position of girls’ basketball coach at Sheyenne High. An announcement was also made that Jeremy Newton has been chosen as football coach and Leah Newton has will be the volleyball coach. The four will be the first head coaches of their respective programs. Kirchoffner is a physical education and health instructor at Sheyenne and has been assisting with the West Fargo basketball program since 2011.

Bryan Schulz of the Red River Valley Fair Association in West Fargo received the Certified Fair Executive status at the International Association of Fairs and Expositions (IAFE) Spring Management Conference held in West Palm Beach, Fla. To receive the Certified Fair Executive status, the applicant must have a minimum of five years’ experience in an executive role. Seventeen individuals received the distinguished status.
WEST FARGO – West Fargo senior wrestler Preston Lehmann was one of 49 high school grapplers to be selected by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum as a recipient of the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Awards on Friday. Lehmann, a three-time state champion, represented North Dakota on the awards list, which also included five regional finalists for the national award, which will be announced May 6. Friends and family along with staff at Westside Elementary School will host a Westside Fun for Families Night on Thursday, May 2 to help the Dan and Heidi Schaeffer family. The family has experienced extreme and on-going hard times and stress for almost four years since Heidi was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009. She has fought hard, and after a mastectomy, hysterectomy and chemotherapy, the cancer is now in remission. However, she is still taking Herceptin monthly to keep it at bay.
Cinco de Mayo, a lively Mexican festival, will be celebrated Saturday, May 4, at Faith Lutheran Church, 127 2nd Ave. E., West Fargo, beginning with a silent auction at 5:30 p.m. and a Mexican dinner served at 6 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for ages 6-12. Children up through age five are free.
