WEST FARGO — The West Fargo Patriots American Legion baseball team opened league play on Monday with a doubleheader split with Grand Forks, winning the opener 5-2 before falling 5-3 in Game 2 .
West Fargo took the lead for good in the opener, when Alex Urlaub laid down a bunt that rolled all the way down the third base line before hitting the bag for an RBI single, putting the Patriots ahead 3-2.
Brayden Jacobson and Ryan Reynolds added RBIs in the fourth and fifth, while Jacobson didn't allow a hit over his final four innings of work on the mound.
In Game 2, Joe Grabanski hit a three-run home run in the top of the third to lead Grand Forks.
West Fargo had several opportunities to cut into the lead, but stranded multiple runners on base in five of seven innings, leaving the bases loaded in the third and fifth.
Dustin Mertz, led off the seventh with a home run, and after an error made it 5-3, West Fargo brought the tying run to the plate, but was unable to complete the comeback.
