WEST FARGO — Laurie and Allen Kent of West Fargo were just waiting for a sign.
Allen worked long weeks on the road, driving a semi for their family trucking business. The time away from their two sons, 4-year-old Benny and 10-year-old Dayton, was tough.
“It’s hard. It’s hard on a family,” Laurie said. “We decided we were going to try to get him home.”
They knew it was time for a change. Little did they know, that change would come via desk decor.
Laurie used her husband’s plasma saw to cut and craft a North Dakota state sign for her desk at her accounting job.
“Once I said I made it, everybody wanted one,” Laurie laughed.
She began making more, putting them up for sale on the Facebook Marketplace. Soon, business was booming from their garage. Pretty soon, it became clear that a decision needed to be made.
“When this started blowing up, he’s (Allen) the one who originally stepped away from his job and started working here and billing the signs,” Laurie said. “But it became too much, so I took the leap, too.”
The Kents sold the semi for the trucking business, and their storage garage became their full-time family workshop, with the name ‘Made With Love by Laurie.’
“I stepped out of the truck and had to step right in here and start working, so it couldn’t have worked out any better," said Allen.
Their young sons soon began helping them out.
“It’s really cool cause you sand it, you stain it, you put it together and then you sell it," said Dayton.
“I just play,” giggled Benny.
Business is booming now, with about 100 fresh orders coming in for signs each week.
"Some people don't ever get an opportunity like this,” Allen said. “So we're super grateful that we can do this."
“It’s good for the kids, they're happy now they have dad around," added Laurie. "We can have the kids here with us. We try to rotate our afternoons so the kids can play.”
Beyond a wide selection of state designs, Made With Love by Laurie also creates custom designs, too.
