WEST FARGO-Duluth Trading Co., a retail store famous for its risque advertising campaigns and workman's tool and apparel lines, is planning to open its first store in North Dakota.

Mayor Rich Mattern said the West Fargo Planning and Zoning Committee approved an application for the company's new store at its Aug. 15 meeting. The new store will be located near Costco, or Ninth Street and 23rd Avenue South.

"From what I can tell, it's the first one in North Dakota," Mattern said. "It would be joining an elite corner there by Costco and the hotels. It's exciting any time you get a new store coming in."

According to the company's website, Duluth Trading Co. was started by two brothers in 1989, with the invention of "Bucket Boss" - a canvas tool organizer that fit on a drywall bucket and could easily be transported. The brothers eventually created a catalog of portable products and opened a storefront in Duluth, Minn. The business expanded to include work clothing, and the company's headquarters is now located in Belleville, Wis., with stores scattered across the upper Midwest.

"I really like their commercials," Mattern said. "They invented the T-shirt that is long in back to get rid of the plumbers butt, you know. It will be interesting."
