West Fargo's own Sandy's Donuts turned 35 this week.

Sandy and Donna Ostlund opened the doors to Sandy's Donuts & Coffee Shop Sept. 13, 1983. Sandy Ostund had lost his job at a trucking company at age 55 and decided to open a shop after he had trouble finding work. He had learned to make donuts from his mother and had been making her recipe for family and friends for years before opening the shop. He and Donna operated the first shop in West Fargo. Eventually, their son Mark returned from college to help with the family business.

Sandy's moved into its current location on Sheyenne Street in 2002. At that time, Donna retired and Mark took over the business full time. Sandy continued to work at the shop until suffering a stroke in 2008. He died a few months later on Oct. 13, 2008. In 2014, Sandy's expanded to a second location in Fargo, and the West Fargo location was expanded to include a 2,000 square foot kitchen in 2015. The donut business continues to grow, with delivery options now expanded as far as Grand Forks.

The West Fargo location at 301 Sheyenne St. W. remains Sandy's flagship store.
