Liberty students chosen as "Best in State" for Verizon app challenge
A team of sixth-grade students from Liberty Middle School recently won "Best in State" for the development of their S.P.E.D.T. Verizon Innovative App Challenge submission.
The student team worked to create an application in Gretchen Peterson's math class that rewards students for completing their homework on time.
The 2015-16 Liberty Middle School "Best in State" team was Taylor Bjerke, Chase Hapka, Devon Johnson, Ava Stockstad, Maren Thurn and Jaden Novak.
As a "Best in State" winner, the team and their adviser will receive a $5,000 cash award to promote STEM education in their school. Each team member also receives a Samsung Galaxy Tablet.
They are now qualified to complete for both the "Best in Region" and "Fan Favorite" award titles.
From now until Jan. 31, anyone can vote to help the team win the Fan Favorite award, which earns the team an additional $15,000 and the chance to work with experts from MIT Media Lab to turn their concept into a real, working app. In past years, these prizes have been reserved for eight, judge selected, Best In Nation teams.
