FARGO — The Deacons have made a name for themselves in Class 3A football.

Fargo Shanley notched a 42-20 victory over West Fargo Sheyenne on Friday night, ending the Mustangs five-game winning streak.

Shanley tallied six touchdowns against No. 2-ranked Sheyenne in a momentous Eastern Dakota Conference matchup. The Deacons checked in at No. 4 in the latest Class 3A football poll. Sheyenne sat at No. 2.

Friday's contest was the first time the two ranked teams had ever faced each other. This is the first season in 11 years that Shanley is back playing Class 3A football. And they've proved they belong in the conference.

Friday's win at Sid Cichy Stadium rose the Deacons to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the EDC. The Mustangs now have an identical record, falling to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

Shanley scored less than two minutes into the game on a 28-yard run by junior Carter Kochmann. Emmet Kenney's kick was good to make it 7-0 with 10 minutes, 26 seconds left in the first quarter.

Eight minutes later, Kochmann found the end zone again to make it 14-0 heading into the second quarter.

Sheyenne's Tyler Terhark, a North Dakota State commit, got the Mustangs on the board 30 seconds into the second quarter with a 15-yard touchdown run. Tony Hoang tallied the extra point to make it 14-7.

Terhark, typically a wide receiver, took charge of the Mustangs offense by playing quarterback in Friday's matchup. Sheyenne's sophomore quarterback Grant Warkenthien was unable to play this week after being kicked out of last Friday's contest against West Fargo High.

Shanley's Talon Hoffer picked up a Mustangs fumble and carried it 10 yards into the end zone with six minutes remaining in the first half to make it 21-7.

Within two minutes, Hoffer marched 26 yards into the end zone and added his second touchdown of the quarter. Kenney connected on his fourth extra point to give the Deacons a 28-7 lead. That score would stick heading into the second half.

Hoffer scored for the Deacons on a 3-yard reception from Cooper Mattern in the first four minutes of the second half — his third touchdown of the game, making it 35-7 Shanley.

The Mustangs scored on first-and-goal thanks to an 8-yard reception from Terhark to Barika Kpeenu. Terhark faked to his right to launch the ball into the end zone. Hoang connected on the kick to make it 35-14 with just under three minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Deacons quarterback Mattern plowed through Sheyenne's defensive line to add a fourth-quarter touchdown for Shanley on second-and-goal. Kenney connected on his sixth extra point of the game, giving Shanley a 42-14 lead with six minutes to go in the game.

Terhark responded with a fourth-quarter touchdown to make it 42-20 with 1 minute 20 seconds remaining in the game. That score would stick.

Terhark's three total touchdowns weren't enough to lift the Mustangs to a win over Shanley.

The Mustangs faced a major blow entering this season with the loss of senior running back Nathan Goldade, the state's leading rusher and scorer in 2018, who tore his ACL earlier this summer.

Heading into Friday's contest, the Mustangs came off of a 21-6 rivalry win over West Fargo High on Friday, Sept. 27.

Sheyenne plays at home against Grand Forks Central (0-5, 0-3 EDC) at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10.
