The West Fargo Sheyenne girls swimming and diving team broke two records to fuel a first-place finish at the Eastern Dakota Conference championship meet Saturday at Hulbert Aquatic Center. The Mustangs clinched the conference title for the second year in a row.
The Mustangs' 200-yard medley relay team of Breanna Lund, Lauren McDonagh, Tierney Howell and Madi Yonke set a new EDC record, finishing in 1 minute, 51.7 seconds. Greta Bellas set a new pool record in the 500 freestyle with her time of 5:11.61.
Sheyenne, which recorded seven first-place finishes, scored 529 points for the top spot. Fargo Davies was second with 332 points and West Fargo placed third at 284.5.
Yonke, a senior who has been on the squad since the Mustangs became a team, was named the EDC Senior Athlete of the Year. Yonke captured the top spot in the 100 free with a swim of 55.33.
Bellas, a sophomore, placed first in the 200 free (1:56.02), and was part of the first-place 400 freestyle relay team of Howell, Yonke and Bree Triplett.
Sheyenne also had two other swimmers punch in a first-place finish. Howell swam to first place in the 50 free with a time of 24.78, and Lauren McDonagh finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.82).
The Packers' 200-yard freestyle relay team of Liv Hettinger, Hannah Potter, Tatum Brooks and Alexis Doeling finished first in 1 minute, 42.3 seconds for third-place West Fargo. Hettinger, Brooks and Potter received All-Conference honors.
Six Mustangs were named to the All-Conference team (Howell, Bellas, Yonke, Triplett, McDonagh and Madee Shea).
The Packers and Mustangs will finish out their seasons at state Nov. 15-16 in Bismarck.
