We're smack dab in the middle of the dog days of summer — a time when the sun is hot even up here in the Upper Midwest. It might be feeling a little tropical. So why not eat something that Jamaicans swear by?
Saturday, Aug. 3, is National Jamaican Patty Day.
What the heck is a Jamaican Patty? It's a flaky turnover filled with ground beef, chicken, seafood or vegetables similar to the Indian samosa or Latin empanada. According to Tasting Table, the Jamaican Patty is one of the world's best savory pies.
It's made with spices from the island including turmeric and is "a remnant from when the British first colonized the Caribbean. A sunnier iteration of the Cornish pasty, it takes full advantage of the island's flourishing spices by boosting the beef filling with allspice, thyme and Scotch bonnet chile for heat."
If you're looking to try one for yourself, the website Immaculate Bites has a version that gets great reviews and Chef Andre Fowles demonstrates his version below.
