If larger refuse items have been piling up throughout the year in your basement or garage and you are itching to get rid of them, next week will be your big chance as the city of West Fargo observes its annual city wide Cleanup Week Monday, May 2, through Friday, May 6.
West Fargo Sanitation Department Manager Dennis Correll said the process will run nearly identical to the way it has in previous years.
Crews will be out in full force picking up items that residents wouldn't normally dispose of on a regular garbage day, like tires, appliances, etc., all at no charge. The only criteria is that the garbage is residential and not commercial in nature.
Correll said a lot of residents think that clean up week means setting excess trash out anytime during the week, but that's not the case. They want residents to set their extra garbage out on their boulevards before 6 a.m. on their respective pickup days to make the process as efficient as possible.
Residents can also help out by following a few rules that will make it much easier for collection crews, including: separating items of the same type into distinct groupings - tires, appliances, furniture, lumber, brush, household garbage, etc.; placing garbage in disposable containers, except for oversized items; and removing doors on refrigerators and freezers, with all food stuffs removed. There is no limit being placed on the number of appliances that can be disposed of.
As in the past, members of the Sanitation Department will be assisted by Street and Water Department personnel, using different trucks and payloaders, to complete the collection.
Correll said trucks will be selectively picking up garbage and making several passes, so residents don't need to worry if everything isn't taken at one time.
Residents wanting to haul away larger items themselves, are encouraged to do so all week long, free of charge, by taking refuse to the city's transfer station at 1620 W. Main Ave. All that is required is proof of identification, such as a driver's license, confirming West Fargo residency.
The transfer station is open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday with crews on hand to assist. During the year, regular hours at the transfer station are 1 to 4 p.m., on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
All types of hazardous household waste will also be accepted during cleanup week, including paint and oil, but Correll encourages residents to dispose of their own hazardous waste items by taking them to the Fargo Hazardous Waste Facility located by the Fargo landfill. This service is available to West Fargo residents due to the fact that West Fargo garbage is taken to the Fargo landfill. This is a process that can be done all year long at no charge.
Correll said residents wishing to dispose of larger debris on a regular basis throughout the year are able to do so. The only exception is that there is a $10 charge for each appliance at anytime other than cleanup week, because the sanitation crews have to dispose of them differently at an expense to the city. The amount is charged to the resident's regular utility bill.
