VERGAS, Minn. - A fire destroyed a garage in rural Vergas in Otter Tail County early on Sunday, Dec. 31. An adult male was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.
The Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office received a call at 4:47 a.m. on Sunday from a homeowner reporting that a detached garage was on fire at 30229 Candor Hall Road. When the Vergas Fire Department reached the scene, the garage was fully engulfed in flames.
By the time the fire was extinguished, the garage was considered to be a total loss. It contained an SUV, ATV, power tools and other items. The garage was owned by Marie and Duane Fillipi, who live at the same address.
Michael Bannach, 50, of Fargo was treated for smoke inhalation. There were no other injuries.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The Vergas Fire Department was aided by the Detroit Lakes and Frazee fire departments, Vergas Rescue, and the Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office.
