Week In history: Aug. 29, 2018
At the end of August 1973 one of the tanks at Williams Pipeline Company storage facility on Main Avenue was struck by lightning and the fire spread to a second tank. West Fargo and National Guard firefighters responded. Both tanks had a "floating lifter roof" which protected the 3 to 4 feet of gas at the bottom from the flames that were contained at the top of both structures.
After 12 years of discussion, planning and fund raising, the groundbreaking for the Veterans Memorial Arena took place east of the West Fargo High School in 1988. It truly had been a community effort with a special nod to the VFW's contributions to West Fargo. The Arena was scheduled to be completed by January 1, 1989.
