As February 1979 drew to a close, Cargill Incorporated of Minneapolis announced its plan to build the first plant in the United States to be used to process only sunflowers. The $18 million plant would be located in Riverside, N.D., population 275. The site was based on the rapid growth of sunflower cultivation in the Red River Valley and west. It would bring 40 to 50 new jobs to the area.

The 2014 State Hockey Tournament was a dramatic one for the West Fargo girls team. The championship game found the Packers facing the Bismarck Blizzard, the team won the championship against them in 2013. The Packers scored the first goal, but a few minutes later Captain Tori Holland left the game with a broken collarbone. The Packers won the game 2-1. Senior forward, Kelly Krahn, had 8 goals, 4 assists and was named tournament MVP. Holland was senior player of the year.
