Finalists have been announced for West Fargo's top cop job, which include the current interim chief.

The finalists are:

  • Jerry Boyer, West Fargo assistant chief and current interim police chief
  • Denis Otterness, the Chief of Police for Montana State University in Billings, Mont.
  • Shane McSheehy, a Chief Operations Officer for the U.S. Police Instructor Teams in Florida and a current Lake County School Board member

The city began a national search for a police chief after Heith Janke announced he would be returning to the FBI in May after taking the job in mid-2017.

Assistant Chief Jerry Boyer has been serving as interim chief since he was appointed in late April by the City Commission.

West Fargo City Hall has remained closed to the public since March 18, but is expected to open again to the public June 15. At the City Commission's last meeting, City Administrator Tina Fisk said upcoming rounds of finalist interviews were pushed back until after the city reopens due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Last weekend, two officers tested positive for COVID-19, the first reported cases within the department. Since then, many command staff have been placed in quarantine, and civilian staff was asked to work from home Wednesday, June 10.
