FARGO — The pedestrian who was struck and killed by a freight train near downtown Fargo on Thursday night, April 25, has been identified as Trent Alexander Mitchell, 24.

Fargo police said Mitchell had no permanent address. An autopsy will be completed, police said.

Emergency personnel were called to the scene about a quarter mile east of the railroad overpass on Second Street North along the flooded Red River about 6:35 p.m. Thursday. Police later announced that Mitchell had traumatic injuries and died at the scene.

Police then investigated the scene, and the Cass County coroner later arrived to pick up Mitchell's body.

The eastbound BNSF train, which was heard slamming on its brakes about 6:30 p.m., was stopped on the tracks for more than two hours, blocking traffic crossings on the north side of downtown Fargo.
