Oil spill leaks 1,000 gallons onto ag land near Watford City
BISMARCK, N.D. – The North Dakota Department of Health has been notified of a crude oil spill of 160 barrels or 6,720 gallons in McKenzie County about 16 miles southeast of Watford City.
Initial estimates indicate those 160 barrels were released from the treater unit on a well pad. Of this amount, an estimated 24 barrels, or about 1,000 gallons, leaked onto nearby agricultural land. The rest was apparently contained on the well pad.
The spill was the result of equipment failure in the treater unit.
The well is owned by Burlington Resources Oil & Gas Company LP. The spill was discovered on Sunday, March 11, and was reported the same day.
Personnel from the NDDoH are inspecting the site and will continue to monitor the investigation.
