FARGO — A man has been arrested after police say he dug up a grave at a Fargo cemetery on Wednesday, June 26.
The incident was reported at about 5:40 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens, 1715 52nd Ave. S., where officers found a disturbed grave site, Fargo police said in a Facebook post.
A worker had noticed a man digging up a grave and confronted him. When the man didn't respond, the worker called 911, police said.
As officers were investigating the area, Jordan Lee Schweitzer showed up at the scene. Schweitzer admitted to digging up the grave, police said. It's unclear why he dug up the grave.
Schweitzer, 30, with no permanent address, was arrested on suspicion of disturbing a human burial site, a Class C felony.
The grave is the burial site of Joshua G. Nelson. Nelson, who attended Fargo South High School and worked for Cullen Insulation, died from a heroin overdose in 2013, according to a previous Forum story.
Family said on Facebook that the grave was dug down to the concrete vault that holds the casket. The casket apparently was not disturbed.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise money to repair Nelson's grave, headstone and the decorations that had been placed there as a memorial.
