Throughout February and March, fifth grade students from Freedom Elementary School and Independence Elementary School participated in the City of Fargo’s Plastic Bag Recycling Challenge.
At the conclusion of the challenge, Independence Elementary School earned first place and Freedom Elementary School earned third place.
Independence Elementary School earned first place for collecting 120 pounds of plastic bags
and Freedom Elementary School earned third place for collecting 71 pounds of plastic bags.
The first place prize is a school bench made from recycled plastic and the third place prize is
an ice cream party.
The purpose of the challenge was for students to learn about the effects plastic bags have on
our landfills and the benefits of using reusable bags. Students received a classroom
presentation from Jen Pickett, City of Fargo Recycling Coordinator, that showed scenes from
the Fargo landfill on windy days and detailed the amount of work it takes to clean up plastic
bags that fly around the city. Each student was provided a reusable bag to help educate
his/her family on reducing the use of plastic bags while shopping.
