Wiinanen, Bowles, recognized at Coastal Carolina
Brenna J. Wiinanen, a music major from West Fargo, was among 770 Coastal Carolina University students named to the President's List for the spring 2019 semester. To be named to the list, students must achieve a 4.0 grade point average (GPA) for the semester. CCU has a student body of 10,600.
Austin M. Bowles, a theatre arts major from West Fargo, was among more than 2,000 Coastal Carolina students were named to the Dean's List for the spring 2019 semester. To be named to the list, students must achieve a GPA between 3.5 and 3.99.
Gibson earns scholarship
Melanie Gibson, daughter of James and Gayle Gibson, West Fargo, received the North Dakota State University Provost Award Scholarship in the amount of $6,000. The scholarship recognizes students who scored 25 to 28 on the ACT and high academic achievement. Gibson will enter NDSU in the fall and plans to major in psychology. In high school, she was active in Just for Kix, band, National Honor Society, Key Club, Packer Pride Club and fine arts.
WF student video earns Best in State
A team of West Fargo High School students submitted a video to the 2018-2019 World of 7 Billion student video contest and earned the Best in State award for North Dakota. Colton Rheaume, Ethan Saari, and Tyler Thompson created a 60-second video identifying the issues related to deforestation and population growth. The contest is part of an international program, Population Education, highlighting the impact of the world’s increasing population. An estimated 5,500 students from 43 countries submitted more than 2,700 entries to this year’s contest. As the state’s award winners, the team will receive a cash prize from Population Education.
Packer Backers present Flame Award to Berntson
The West Fargo Packer Backer Board was pleased to name Mark Berntson as the Flame Award recipient for the 2018-2019 school year. The Flame Award is presented annually to a member of the community who is dedicated to supporting all extracurricular activities at West Fargo High School.
Berntson is a familiar presence at many West Fargo events and is an individual who continually supports and encourages students both during and after high school. He has been a teacher for over 25 years and serves as a guitar instructor at both West Fargo and Sheyenne High Schools. Berntson was presented with a plaque at the WFHS Academic and Athletic Recognition Night that was held May 1, in the high school’s main gymnasium.
Gapp earns scholarship
Elise Gapp, daughter of Chris and Jackie Gapp, West Fargo, received the Freshman Academic Scholarship in the amount of $2,000 at North Dakota State University. The scholarship recognizes high academic achievement.
Gapp will enter NDSU in the fall and plans to major in occupational or physical therapy. In high school, she was active in orchestra, dance and National Honor Society.
