Mountain lion keeps kids from recess at South Dakota school
BOX ELDER, S.D. -- A mountain lion spotted Thursday morning at the Douglas School District in Box Elder has led administrators to keep students off the playgrounds until further notice.
"Someone saw it this morning and reported it, and my security guy — we've got a ton of cameras — found it on the footage," said Superintendent Alan Kerr. The security officer tracked the mountain lion from "camera to camera," Kerr said.
In a statement Thursday afternoon, Kerr said the mountain lion was spotted on school property between 5 and 5:30 a.m. In his fifth year with the district, Kerr said he can't recall a mountain lion visiting the school in the past.
"We are keeping all students off playgrounds as a precautionary measure until further notice," he said.
