The September 5, 1984 Pioneer carried the story of West Fargo Park District director Laurie Helling’s family vacation to the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. In one of the photos in the article Laurie’s 13-year-old brother Ricky is shown getting an autograph from a member of the US baseball team. Ten years later, he was Rick Helling making his Major League pitching debut for the Texas Rangers. He was the 1998 American league wins leader and World Series champion in 2003. He retired in 2006.
When school started in the Fall of 2004, the new Cheney Middle School was not quite finished, however it was close enough to welcome nearly 1,300 students. Books were still being unwrapped and put on the shelves in the library but classrooms and the cafeteria were ready to go. Any work remaining would take place before or after school hours. The last thing to be completed was a state-of-the-art, 799-seat auditorium scheduled to be online by October.
