In 1989, just prior to press time, the Pioneer learned from a staff official in Sen. Quentin Burdick’s office that the appropriations bill for the Sheyenne Diversion project for West Fargo and Horace had received the signature of President George Bush. The appropriation bill contains $5.5 million, which could be adjusted, but only diminutive, according the Burdick staff person.”
This announcement in the bottom corner of the front page of the October 11, 1989 West Fargo Pioneer signaled a new era for the West Fargo area. In the 1990 census West Fargo had a population of 14,940 with a school enrollment of 4,315 and a property tax base of $27,187,588. West Fargo’s estimated population is 36,566 with a school of 11,501 and a property base of $396,887,340.
