WEST FARGO — West Fargo Public Schools is gearing up for it's Student Success Forums.
The first forum is on Oct. 8 and will discuss the hot topic issue of social media. There will be several presentations involving monitoring a student's social media, how social media impacts youth and how technology affects adolescent brain development.
The school district implemented four forums in 2018, after a West Fargo teacher, Shannon Moser, pleaded guilty to having sex with a student. Another West Fargo teacher, Elizabeth Doster, was accused of partying with students in 2017.
The forums are open to students and parents, to discuss various issues within the schools. The district says the discussions had great feedback, and it decided to hold four more this year.
West Fargo Police Chief Heith Janke says the social media forum will teach parents how to keep kids safe.
"We have predators that are out there every day and looking to harm kids," Janke said. "This isn't so much as a 13-year-old snapping with a 13-year-old. To me, it's more about the predators that are 40-year-old men in their basements pretending they're 13 years old, to take advantage and sexually exploit our children."
The social media forum will take place from 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at the Dakota Medical Foundation.
The remaining three forums will include mental health, healthy relationships and substances and weapons. They are free and open to the public.
