The first Pioneer of November 2004 had a strong emphasis on deer hunting. Sports Editor Tyler Shoberg wrote a front page article explaining that local organizations see venison as a source of meat for food banks. He included contact information for several plus places where hunters could bring their donations to be processed. Shoberg also featured “Jerky Worth Fighting For,” a group who made venison jerky to send to U.S. troops who are deployed. He a second article was aptly titled, “Plan ahead to make deer opener more enjoyable.”

The top half of the November 4, 2014 Pioneer, was a photo of Janelle Hogenson and her camera with the title “Picture Perfect.” Hogenson had taken pictures of her youngest son playing his final year of football and parents asked if she would keep on. That’s how she happened to capture the image of Devils Lake’s Melanie Bailey carrying injured Danielle LeNoue from Fargo South at the EDC cross country meet. She sent the photo to the Athletic Directors at both schools. Somehow it went viral and appeared on ABC World News Tonight and landed the girls an appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show.
