In 2018, 14 candidates filed for election to four West Fargo School Board seats. This year, three seats will be up for reelection, and so far, at least one incumbent will not be running.
Three school board member terms expire in June 2020: current Board President Patti Stedman, Andrea Payne and Dan Schaeffer.
Payne, who was elected in 2016 to her first term is not planning to seek reelection. She said although she has enjoyed her time in office, it's time to give someone else a chance to serve the community.
"I think it's just time to give to someone else in the community to serve, it's been an awesome learning opportunity and I've learned a lot and met a lot," Payne said. "I would love to give someone else that opportunity."
Stedman said Monday she is still fully weighing the option of seeking a fourth term, but the longtime board president who helped usher in two major bond referendums in the past five years said she will likely run again.
"It's been 12 years, but I really enjoy it and I think I still have more to give," Stedman said.
Stedman said when she started on the board, her children were in second and third grade. Although her children are no longer in the district, she's always been a watchdog of taxpayer money and she plans to continue that work.
"I still think I can contribute to the financial side of things," she said.
Schaeffer, who was also elected to his first term in 2016, said he is still deciding if he will seek reelection.
Schaeffer said he wants to talk with his family and constituents before finalizing his candidacy decision, but he leans towards returning to the board as well.
"Sometimes you have to ask the hard questions and I'm the one to do that," he said.
Candidates must file two documents with the district's business office, an affidavit of candidacy and a statement of interest by the deadline of 4 p.m. April 6.
Business Manager Levi Bachmeier said Monday, Feb. 3, that so far no one has filed for candidacy.
The seven-member school board each serve four-year, at-large terms. The school board encompasses not just West Fargo but parts of Fargo and the communities of Horace and Harwood.
Bachmeier said the documents can be found on the West Fargo School Board's website.
"School board candidates are exempt from financial disclosures. It's actually a pretty straightforward process," Bachmeier said.
